Have you eaten a frog today?

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day”. Mark Twain. green-frog-9198-small

Brian Tracy is the expert on frog eating and he says there are 2 rules.

1. If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.

2. If you have to eat a live frog at all, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it for very long.

Frogs are those tasks, jobs, things you have to do but they are big, ugly and a bit scary. So we put them off. We make a cup of tea, we work on that presentation, we talk to a colleague…we do anything but eat the frog!

BUT the frog is still there. It’s looking at you. It gets bigger and uglier and you spend precious energy trying to avoid it, not think about it. The trouble with frogs is that they are distracting and they demand your attention even though you want to think about something else.

And what happens at the end of the day when you haven’t dealt with that frog? It sometimes hops in your bag and comes home with you. It distracts you from your family and can wake you up at night. No one wants to look at a frog on their pillow right?

So get it done. Eat that frog. Eat it fast and do it first!

Zero in on the most challenging tasks and get them done first. You’ll get more done faster, you’ll focus better and you’ll get the right things done.

Imagine what you will do with all your extra time.

Graduates' Celebration at Morgan Advanced Materials

Peter and cakeWell done to all Morgan Advanced Materials graduates who passed their ILM Level 5! Two years hard work culminated in a black tie dinner held in their honour on 16 November.

It was a wonderful evening and well attended by senior management including Pete Raby - CEO, Hazel Bell - European HR Director and Keith Parker - Marketing Director. We were very proud and honoured to attend and celebrate the graduates’ achievement.

Congratulations to each and every one of them.

BBC History weekend

hw-logo

Our ancient hilltop town, Malmesbury, was chosen once again to host one of the BBC’s History Weekends in October. We welcomed 40 leading historians and authors who came to speak about a wide range of subjects. We felt incredibly privileged to attend a number of these lectures.

We particularly enjoyed Sir Max Hastings’ incredible talk about the secret war fought through espionage and intelligence in World War II. He is a speaker that draws you in with his conversational manner and you can’t help but hang on his every word.

Equally awe inspiring were Saul David’s revelations about Operation Thunderbolt. He recounted his research on the famous 1976 hijack and its bloody resolution in Entebbe by Israeli commandos. It's considered by many to be the most audacious hostage rescue mission in history.

We think it's important for us to attend events like this and see a wide variety of speakers and presenters. Not just for personal interest in the content and to have a great night out, but also because it adds to our own professional learning and appreciation of different presenting styles. It keeps us fresh, continually developing and adding to our wealth of experience that we can then use in our work with clients and delegates.

Graduate Leadership Programme gets under way

morgan-logo

Our fourth cohort of Graduates at Morgan Advanced Materials kicked off their Leadership Programme including ILM level 5 certification in sunny Ruabon, Wales with us in October. They spent their first day developing, polishing and honing their presentation skills.

It’s a challenging start to the programme but an essential skill to master in business and one that the graduates rose to impressively. The second day focussed on understanding behaviour and was spent outdoors working on practical and sometimes physical challenges. Relationships were forged and teams bonded. Great to see. We are already looking forward to the next module.

What our clients think...

"It's me who wants to thank you. You made this programme very interesting with your personal feeling and approach."

Service engineer
Elekta

"I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your help with this ILM 3. All your feedback and guidance has really helped me gain confidence, although a lot of people think I have it already, you pulled it out of me (in a good way) and help me overcome it as well as fears! I feel stronger after doing this course and I have gained much more than just the qualification thanks to you."

Project Manager
Balfour Beatty

"I have been amazed at the invigoration of my managers due to this programme. (ILM Level 5)."

Senior Manager
Balfour Beatty

"Need for Achievement have provided a wide range of training programmes to Morgan Advanced Materials for several years now. They have always been delivered to a very high standard and the feedback from all delegates has always been very positive especially regarding the style and the content that is delivered. The training provided by Need for Achievement is very valuable in that all of the delegates have been able to apply what they learnt to real business challenges and as a result people feel more confident, more empowered and as a result productivity and results show the right trends. I would recommend them without question."

Rob Park, General Manager
Morgan Advanced Materials

"I have worked with Need for Achievement for a few years now and when I joined the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT) last year I identified the need for some training for our supervisors and middle managers. The SBT has a fantastic history of promoting internally, however, what this meant was that many of our managers had never received any management or leadership training. With Need for Achievement's help we designed the Management Empowerment Programme based around ILM level 3 qualification and additional modules specific to our business. We have already seen real benefits associated with the training not least a significant improvement in cross departmental working as people met new colleagues through their training. The difference with Need for Achievement is the additional personal touches and support that you receive that are real value add."

Becky Cund, Head of HR
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

"It was thoroughly enjoyable and extremely beneficial. Peter is an excellent coach."

"The coaching I have received has been extremely beneficial to my development and also in the way I manage a newly created team. The help and assistance I have gained through our sessions has helped me to overcome issues and guide me in the right direction."

"Need for Achievement are an integral part of our work to develop our people at Elekta. They help contribute to building a stronger performance culture across our organisation. We demand high standards of delivery and Need for Achievement have never let us down. They have the highest levels of integrity and ethics and we have built real trust them as a long term partner."

Cameron Conneely, Director, Global Learning & Development
Elekta

"Thank you so much for all the training and support over the past 2 years, I can honestly say I use it every day and can see how the models work. It's been fascinating to watch the development of my cell leaders. Dan Pink was right - giving people autonomy, purpose and mastery works! I gave them specific products that they have to track and sort the issues out for, they take it on the chin if their products run late, they get the blame, but also the recognition when they succeed, it's amazing they are working sooo much harder yet are visibly so much happier. It's pretty hilarious hearing their fighting talk in the morning of how they will hit their targets!"

Graduate
Morgan Advanced Materials

"Need for Achievement has empowered me to think outside the box on subjects such as team dynamic, perception and self-reflection. I feel I have enhanced my ability to be an effective manager as a direct result of these coaching sessions."

Coachee
The White Company

"I wanted to say thank you for the very insightful, useful and helpful training course last Monday. I took a lot away with me and have been putting it into practice already. It is easy to forget about bringing the teams along when we are as busy as we get during the summer, but this is just the time we are able to test their mettle, offer them opportunities to stretch their wings etc."
